While the Joplin High School (JHS) golf team is not the most well-known sport in the building, the team of five have played their way to the title of district champions.
“Everyone’s gotten better this year, we’ve added new players. Everyone is a team player. As a team, we’ve gained a lot of friendships,” said Fielding Campbell, sophomore. “ It’s just really helped us to compete as a team.”
On Apr. 29., the group competed at the golf course in Carthage, Mo., where Campbell placed 1st overall. Behind him in 2nd place was teammate Ethan Sage, sophomore. Also on the leaderboard were Christopher Pryor (in 6th place) and Alex Ramirez (in 15th place), both seniors.
“Our team will continue to get better every year, our seniors and the underclassmen have set high expectations for the ongoing seasons and players,” said Kristopher Garrett, assistant coach.
This year, Joplin Schools’ athletics program switched to the Central Ozark Conference (COC). Despite this change and playing against unfamiliar teams, the golfers were able to earn the rank of conference champions.
“Winning conference as a team was a huge deal since this is our first year in the COC,” said Campbell. “With a few players added to the team, it’s been really impressive what we’ve been able to accomplish this year.”
